Poland hits back as Belarus makes Soviet invasion anniversary a public holiday

Poland has lashed out at Belarus after the country established a ‘Day of People’s Unity’ holiday on 17 September – the day that the Soviet Union invaded Poland and Ukraine during WW1.

Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union had signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact on 23 August 1939, under which they agreed to carve up Poland between themselves. Hitler’s armies invaded Poland on September 1, while the USSR invaded on 17 September. Source Euronews

Ethiopian Military Buildup around Renaissance Dam

Ethiopia has stepped up army deployment near the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), setting off the alarm on tensions rising between the African state on the one hand and Egypt and Sudan on the other.

Brussels prepares case against Germany over ECB ruling

The European Commission is preparing a case to assert the primacy of EU courts over rulings from Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court. The issue relates to the buying of government bonds by the European Central Bank. Brussels is expected to launch an infringement procedure against Germany after a ruling by the country’s Federal Constitutional Court that is seen as incompatible with European Union law.
